Turkoman Bar & Grill

Charcoal, smoke & Turkish hospitality

A family-run Turkish and Mediterranean bar and grill on Newmarket High Street. Meze prepared each morning, kebabs cooked over open charcoal, and a bar that pours until eleven — seven days a week.

The ocakbaşı at the heart of the High Street

Turkoman was built around one piece of equipment: a charcoal grill that runs from the moment we open. Lamb is trimmed and skewered here, kofte is minced and seasoned here, and the flatbread comes off the heat as your table sits down.

Around it sits everything a proper Turkish and Mediterranean table needs — eleven cold meze, a hot meze board built for sharing, slow-cooked kleftiko and guvec from the oven, whole sea bass on the charcoal, and a bar list that runs from Yeni Raki to a Georgian Akhasheni and a well-made Espresso Martini.

We are in the centre of Newmarket, which puts us within easy reach of most of west Suffolk and east Cambridgeshire — Cambridge, Ely, Bury St Edmunds, Mildenhall and Burwell are all a short drive away.

Questions we get asked

Where are you, exactly?

We are at 146 High Street, Newmarket, Suffolk CB8 9AQ — on the main High Street, a short walk from the Clock Tower. Street parking is on the High Street, with the George Lambton and Guineas car parks a few minutes away.

What kind of food do you serve?

Turkish and Mediterranean. The kitchen is built around an ocakbaşı charcoal grill, with cold and hot meze, oven-baked house specials such as kleftiko and guvec, charcoal-grilled seafood and a full vegetarian section alongside it.

How far are you from Cambridge?

Newmarket sits right on the Suffolk and Cambridgeshire border. Cambridge is about 20 minutes by car and Ely around 25, with Burwell, Soham, Mildenhall and Bury St Edmunds all a short drive away.

What are your opening hours?

Seven days a week, 12 noon until 11pm, including bank holidays. The kitchen takes its last orders shortly before close, so please give us a call if you are arriving late.

Do I need to book?

Walk-ins are always welcome. Weekends and race days fill up quickly, so we would recommend reserving — you can do it online in under a minute, or ring 01638 666 868.

Do you cater for vegetarians?

Yes. Most of the cold meze are vegetarian, and there is a dedicated vegetarian section — falafel, imam bayildi, vegetarian guvec baked in the oven, and a vegetarian kebab from the grill.

Can you handle allergies?

Tell us before you order and the kitchen will guide you. Do note that we work with nuts, sesame, dairy and gluten in a busy kitchen, so we cannot guarantee an allergen-free environment.

Do you do large groups and functions?

We do — birthdays, corporate dinners and race-week parties. For parties over 12, call us and we will lay the room out properly.
